Assad Acknowledges Threats Posed by Syrian Unrest

Syrian president Bashar al- Assad had acknowledged that the unrest in his country is a threat to the government and the people of the country. In the first address he was making in two months the president said he will initiate a national dialogue which would be aimed at bringing some changes in the country. He maintained that he will never bow to the people who are protesting to remove him by force. He described them as saboteurs.

The people of the country had been anticipating the speech by the president who is battling to remain in power for about three months of severe protests. The president has been under intense pressure from Turkey, US and European Union countries to carry out reforms in the country to put an end to the protests which is trying to cripple the country.

The president offered to carry out some reforms in the country but the details of how that will come about was not mentioned in the address. What the protesters demand is that President Assad leaves power. It is not yet clear whether the president will agree. The Assad family had been in power for over four decades. There is a one dominant party system of government in the country. It is not yet clear whether the protesters will accept anything outside the resignation of President Assad.

IAEA Commences meeting following Japanese nuclear Mishap

The international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has commenced its meeting in Vienna on Monday; the meeting is regarded as the largest nuclear safety meeting ever to be convened. The meeting was intended to review the nuclear disaster in Japan and possible draw a lesson out of that. The nuclear disaster in Japan is the worst to happen to the world for the past 25 years.

The IAEA reported that the world was disturbed by the Japan disaster adding that the people’s confidence in the security of the nuclear system is shaken. The head of the energy agency Amano disclosed to journalists that despite the mishap in Japan many countries in the world would still rely on nuclear power for their energy sources. He acknowledged that there is the need to strengthen the standards for the establishment of the nuclear power plants.

The meeting is expected to last from Monday to Friday and member countries of IAEA will send ministers and other powerful delegates to review the Japan nuclear mishap and brainstorm on the way to avert similar development in the future.

Already there are proposals already put forward by experts on how best to stop similar incident from happening in the future. One of the suggestions to be reviewed includes the recommendation for the expansion of the role of IAEA in nuclear programs.

NATO admits killing Libyan rebels undeliberately

NATO had admitted that it had mistakenly hit rebel military vehicles at oil town of Brega, mistaken it to be vehicles belonging to the government of Col Moamar Gadhafi. Sunday morning government officials and people around the neighborhood had showed journalists a building which they said was destroyed by NATO air strikes.

At least three bodies were recovered from the rubbles they were later confirmed dead by hospital officials. One of the casualties includes an infant child.

This presentation by the government is credible and this is the first time in three months that the government is presenting a credible report that is linking NATO with civilian casualties.

The destroyed building from all accounts has nothing to do with military operations. Even the people in the neighborhood are critical of the government of Col Gadhafi yet they agreed that the attack was as a result of NATO strikes.

The house according to the neighbors accommodated about three or more families. The government claimed that 15 people were living in that building. However NATO could be reached to confirm the incidence.

However the number of rebel soldiers who have had an injury as a result of NATO attack was not made public, but NATO had regretted the incidence.

Karzai: U.S. Discussing Peace with Taliban

The president of Afghanistan Mr. Hamid Karzai had admitted for the first time that his government and the US are having direct discussions with the Taliban. He acknowledged that the talk is progressing. He acknowledged that the US military is going ahead with the negotiations.

Mr. Karzai blasted the foreign nations who were fighting for years to defend him and his government for about a decade now. The president said that the foreign forces were in his country to protect their own interests and not the interests of the Afghani people. The president spoke at a youth conference at the presidential palace that the foreign forces were using his country.

As the president was lambasting the foreign forces suicide bombers who dressed in Afghani army uniform carried out an attack in a police facility causing heavy gun battle that lasted for over three hours. The incident led to the loss of many lives including the suicide attackers. After the incident the spokesperson for the Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault.

There were conflicting report of what president Karzai said and what he did not say. Some reports of the same comment by the president did not say anything about peace talks.

Report had it that a government spokesperson said that the president had advised the Taliban to accept the constitution of Afghanistan. US embassy officials have declined to comment on the development.

Turkey flays Syrian President for appointing brother in military

The Syrian president Bashar Assad is using the vast security apparatus of the military to deal with the popular uprising against his government. He said to heavily rely on the army division that is commanded by his brother Maher Assad to quell the uprising against him.

This development is not going well with some neighboring countries especially turkey. The Turkey government is reported to have sent powerful envoy to Syria with a letter to the Syrian President Assad asking him to remove his brother Maher Assad from the fourth division commander and presidential guards.

The aim of Turkey according to report is to make it known to President Assad that even if the people of Syria will accept his reforms that they will not accept the activities of his brother Maher Assad. The president is relying on the heavy military assault against the civilians by soldiers that are commanded by his brother to hold to power. It is reported that more than 1000 anti government protesters have died in Syria as a result of the activities of the soldiers.

The letter from Turkey to President Assad contained series of reforms which it would want Syria to implement. Among the requests is that the Syrian people should have the freedom to protest, to express themselves and the immediate ban on the restriction for the formation of political parties.

South Korean soldier shoots at passenger jet

South Korean soldiers have fired at a passenger plane that was flying from China mistaking it to be a North Korean air liner. This can worsen the tensed relationship between the people living in the peninsula.

The firing of the airline was done by two soldiers who were guarding a post located at Gyodong Island which is about one mile south to the border with North Korea. The plane was approaching the Seoul international airport where it was supposed to land.

The relationship between the two Korean neighbors was at its lowest ebb in the decade when Pyongyang decided to cut all relationships with the government in Seoul. The attacked plane which was said to be a South Korean Asian bound aircraft was fired a total of 99 rounds. The firing was continuous for about ten minutes but the range could not reach the position of the aircraft therefore there was no damage done to the aircraft as a result of the attack.

South Korean officials offered explanation on the incident saying that the soldiers mistook the South Korean Asian passenger plane to North Korean plane. The soldiers reacted that way because they were alerted of a possible action by the north.

Opposition Republicans gear up to campaign for 2012 polls

The republican is beginning the selection processes on the candidate that will fly the party’s flag in the 2012 presidential election. The seven candidates who have shown interest for US plum job under the party will start the debate Monday. The seven candidates who would participate in the debate include former house speaker Newt Gingrich and seven others.

The debate will take place at St Anselm College in Sullivan Avenue. Supporters of the party will gather at the venue to watch the candidates’ debate policies. The contestants will use the opportunity to reach out to voters. The campus has been agog with activities in preparation for the debate which was organized by WMUR-TV, CNN and Union leader in Hampshire.

The candidates have visited the campus to familiarize themselves with the environment and finding out the standing and the sitting arrangement.

The debate will afford the party supporters to examine each of the candidates and try to find out their policies would be if they are entrusted with the responsibility of ruling America. Questions to the candidates will come from the panel that is constituted for the debate. Questions would also come from three different locations across the state. The audience will then rate the debate and record their likes and dislikes on the candidates stance on issues.

Computer faults disrupts United Airlines cancelling 36 flights

The last Friday experience where computer faults nearly grinded the activities of the United Airlines is an ugly reminder of what over dependent on technology can cause to the airlines.

The embarrassing development made thousands of the customers of the airline saw there flight information disappear to the tin air, several others were stranded and it all culminated in the cancellation of about 36 flights. The worst of the situation is that the airline has no explanation as to what led to this unfortunate incident.

Similar incident occurred in December when over 10,000 flights were cancelled for about three days. The incident of last Saturday occurred when the passengers have no other alternative as it was late in the night for the passengers to look for another alternative to the problem.

Although the system later came back alive giving hope to the stranded passengers it does not mean that customers of the airline were happy with the development. Many of the passengers voiced their anger to the airline operators over the incidence.

Charles Hobart a spokesman for united airline said that the airline was not going to cancel any other flight saying that they are now coping with the situation. Also spokeswoman for the airline Mary Clark said that the technical department of the airline is blaming the outage of the system to connectivity failure.

Germany working to resolve E. coli contamination

The authorities in Germany said that they are still working to resolve how sprouts farm were contaminated with E. coli which has so far claimed the life of 35 people. The officials on Friday blamed sprouts at lower Saxony state as being responsible for the outbreak. Apart from the number of death about 3000 people were affected by the incident.

However what the authorities of the agriculture ministry were not able to resolve is how the bug was brought to the farm. It is not clear whether the bug was brought by the workers into the farm, or whether bacteria got to the farm through the seed or through any other means.

Tests were conducted on about 1,100 samples, 300 out of them is from the farm. The tests are not concluded and it will continue until answers are found for the problem. The orld Health Organization has reported that about 35 people have so far died of the incidence. Only 1 of the victims is not from Germany.

33 of those who died had rare complication which they developed as a result of the incident which led to kidney failure. So far about 3,255 people have fallen ill as a result. The country is not giving up in the fight against the outbreak.

Apple plans to sell 1.5M Sandy Bridge MacBook

Apple is planning to flood the market with sandy Bridge MacBook which is the latest generation of the product. The company is planning to sale over 1.5 million of the product in each quarter of a year.

If the company meets the target then the product would represent fifty percent of the product’s notebook that is in the market. Already there is a believe in some quarters that apple would be in a position to achieve that.

It was revealed by apple insider that the company has already placed an order for 380,000 of the product for this month. 55 percent of the total order would be in the model of 11.6 inch while the remaining would be 13.3 inch model.

Apple is planning to take the market; the MacBook Air refresh will boost the performance of the Mac sales in the market together with the expected release of Mac OS lion brand. Apple computers are already miles ahead of other PC in the market. The company is expected to market over 18 million apples within the year 2011. It is expected that the operating margin of the lion will be higher than the previous upgrades done by the company. The products would only be marketed through Mac application stores and there would be no retail distribution costs.
